Raising Sage Outdoors

We're the Douglas's... A kiwi family with a background in adventure. For years, our lives were shaped by big missions, long days outside and a constant pull toward wild places.
When Sage came along everything shifted, but not in the way people often expect.
There's a quiet assumption that adventure slows down when you have a baby. That the wild places get put on hold, replaced by routines and convenience. While life does look different now, the core of what matters to us hasn't changed.
If anything, it's become clearer.
We've made a conscious decision to spend as much time together as possible during Sage's formative years. Not just time in the same space, but real, connected time away from distractions, outside in the elements, learning and expereincing the world side by side.
Because we believe there's something important in that.
Time outdoors invites a different pace. It teaches patience, resilience and curiosity. It creates space for connection, not just with nature but with each other. For a child, those early expereinces help shape how they see the world.
Out here, there's no rush to be anywhere else. No expectation for things to be perfect. Just the simplicity of moving, noticing and being present.
It's not always easy. There are plenty of moments that don't go to plan. That's part of it too, learning to adapt, slow down and find joy in the experience rather than the outcome.
We're not chasing extreme these days. We're not trying to prove anything. We're simply choosing to keep showing up as a family, in the places that feel most like us.
These years are short. The time we spend together now, exploring, learning and growing alongside Sage, is something we know will matter for a lifetime.
So this is where it begins...COME HIKE WITH US is the first step of the journey.
