ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Katrina Douglas is an outdoor educator, guide, and mother based in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
With over 15 years’ experience teaching Outdoor Education to high school students, Katrina has spent her career helping young people learn through challenge, reflection, and time in nature.
She has also worked as a polar tourism guide, sea kayaking and driving zodiacs in some of the most remote environments on Earth including the Antarctic and Arctic.
These days, Katrina’s greatest adventures are closer to home. Alongside her husband Josh, she has spent the early years of their son Sage’s life exploring New Zealand first by campervan, then by sailing catamaran discovering that curiosity, resilience, and wonder grow best when families experience the outdoors together.
Struggling to find children’s books that reflected real-life family adventures, Katrina created Curious by Nature to help other families feel inspired, capable, and welcome in nature.
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
Jeff Walesby has been an important part of Katrina’s life since childhood. Some of her fondest memories are of Jeff visiting to babysit and instantly bringing any wild idea to life on paper with quirky, creative sketches.
Years later, Katrina finally found the perfect project to collaborate on with her uncle. Jeff has brought the Curious by Nature stories to life with his clever, hand-drawn illustrations, full of detail and playful surprises. His work captures the story in a way that often tells more than the words alone the more you look, the more you see.
It is a privilege for Katrina to create these children’s books alongside Jeff, celebrating his artistic talent while inspiring families to explore the outdoors together.
